Speiser Fund Announces Grant Awards

April 20, 2016 – The Allen Speiser Memorial Vocational Rehabilitation Fund of the Central New York Community Foundation awarded $5,806 to local nonprofit projects meeting a vocational need for individuals with disabilities.

ARC of Onondaga received $1,300 to purchase materials and supplies for individuals to have access to assistive equipment while working independently at their own sites. This will enable increased efficiency and independence at sites within the community where individuals perform cleaning and janitorial work.

Aurora of CNY received $1,206 to purchase adaptive equipment to be used by legally blind operators at the Syracuse VA Hospital. The adaptive equipment and headsets will ensure the smooth operation of the around the clock staff that fields thousands of calls each week.

The Newland Center received $2,000 to provide job training for adults 55 and older with various disabilities. The training will help them attain the skills needed to be placed in the workforce.

Unity House of Cayuga County received $1,300 to purchase new computers for its Unity Employment Services office in Syracuse. The new equipment will help clients seek and secure jobs.

In 2001, the C.I.G.S. Foundation board of directors chose to direct assets to the Community Foundation to establish a fund to promote the vocational, educational, health and social needs of people with disabilities subject to social barriers. The fund is named in honor of Dr. Allen Speiser, the first director of Consolidated Industries, a sheltered workshop program for people with disabilities.
