Fund for Vocational Rehabilitation Awards Grants

April 5, 2010 (Syracuse, NY) – The Allen Speiser Memorial Fund for Vocational Rehabilitation, a component fund of the Central New York Community Foundation, disbursed $4,770 in grants to five local not-for-profit organizations.

Exceptional Family Resources received $875 to purchase a laminator and laminator supplies for their CAREERS program, which works with young adults who have developmental disabilities to develop an individual career path and help them reach their employment goals.

Oswego Industries received $1,500 to purchase sewing machines for the Blanket Project, which employs individuals with disabilities to produce commercial and military blankets at its Fulton location.

Enable received $1,000 to support their Pink Wheels Work program, a role modeling and mentorship program for high school girls and young women with disabilities who are just entering the workforce.

Syracuse Jewish Family Service received $500 toward the purchase of a van to be used for residents of the Beit Tikva House, an independent living environment for women with disabilities.

Arc of Onondaga received $895 to purchase a pallet scale to be used in Monarch’s partnership with the Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency (OCCRA) on the Battery Recycling Initiative, giving three additional individuals with disabilities sustainable work.

The mission of the Allen Speiser Memorial Fund for Vocational Rehabilitation is to strengthen and support efforts that advance and have a positive impact on vocational rehabilitation services. Vocational rehabilitation is the process of assisting people with any disabling condition to acquire the social, educational and work skills that will lead to employment. The Fund offers grants to support special projects, make new investments, and provide additional staff training, filling in the gaps left by other funding sources.
