SIDS Prevention Fund Awards $3,737 grant

October 15, 2009 (Syracuse, NY) – The Syracuse SIDS Prevention Fund, a component fund of the Central New York Community Foundation, awarded a $3,737 grant to REACH CNY in an effort to decrease the number of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) cases in Central New York. SIDS is the third leading cause of infant death in the United States.

REACH CNY, a nonprofit organization that promotes the health and well-being of local families through education and advocacy, will utilize the grant to increase community awareness of SIDS through risk reduction education and parent support.  The project will include “Safe Sleep Sundays” at thirty churches in the City of Syracuse. Pastors will partner with REACH CNY to educate their congregations on safe sleep practices and to promote their importance during the sermon. Families will also be provided with support for their safe sleep practices through educational materials and infant care items.

The Syracuse SIDS Prevention Fund, administered by the Central New York Community Foundation, was formed in 2007 as a permanent field-of-interest fund. It was established with the accumulated earnings from the Syracuse SIDS Golf Classic to support the elimination of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome through increased community awareness, including parent support programs and risk reduction education, as well as medical research.
